Notes /

The MUSAG Festival’s resident ensemble, Íliber Ensemble, joins forces with the Tomás Luis de Victoria Choir to present a program based on sacred music that emerged in the turbulent political and social context of Spain at the beginning of the 18th century, marked by the death without descendants of the last king of the House of Habsburg, Charles II, and the outbreak of the War of the Spanish Succession. The war ended with the accession to the throne of Philip V of Bourbon, grandson of Louis XIV of France, thus bringing about a change of dynasty in the Spanish crown. This war episode had terrible consequences for the Spanish Monarchy in the economical, political, social and territorial spheres; The results were equally disastrous for Sebastián Durón himself, who had to go into exile in France in 1706 for having shown himself to be a supporter of Archduke Charles of Austria during the conflict, spending his last years in Bayonne and Pau in the service of Queen Mariana of Neuburg, widow of Charles II, and dying in Cambo-les-Bains in 1716, possibly from tuberculosis.
