Notes /
In this lecture, Dr. Antonio del Pino invites us to explore the life and works of Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina (1525-1594), an essential figure of Renaissance music and an undisputed landmark in the history of sacred polyphony. On the occasion of the fifth centenary of his birth, the presentation will address not only the composer’s main biographical milestones but also the enduring significance of his artistic legacy, whose influence reached far beyond his own time and continues to inspire admiration and study today.

Antonio del Pino
Doctor in Musicology from the Pontifical Institute of Sacred Music in Rome, he also holds diplomas in Viola and Organ from the Conservatory of Málaga, as well as in Gregorian Chant and Choral Conducting from the Pontifical Ambrosian Institute of Sacred Music in Milan. His artistic activity has taken him to perform at major international festivals in Italy, Portugal, Switzerland, Belgium, Slovakia, and Hungary, in addition to numerous series and festivals throughout Spain.
At Málaga Cathedral he serves as organist, choir director, and coordinator of its organ cycle, while also carrying out research in the Cathedral’s Music Archive, where he has led projects funded by the Regional Government of Andalusia. As a result of this research, he has recovered previously unknown works, such as the Stabat Mater (1854) by Juan Bautista Cansino, recorded with the Málaga Philharmonic Orchestra and Carlos Álvarez for the IBS Classical label.
Founder of the Capilla Maestro Iribarren and, since 2014, director of the Schola Pueri Cantores of Málaga, he has promoted numerous premieres and recordings in collaboration with ensembles such as the Orquesta Barroca de Sevilla, Concerto 1700, and other distinguished groups, producing more than fifteen albums for labels including Tactus, Brilliant Classics, and IBS Classical.
He has published articles and critical editions with Armelin Musica (Italy) and Ars Hispana, recovering works by José Barrera and repertoire for two organs preserved in Málaga Cathedral. Since 2016 he has maintained a close collaboration with Marco Frisina, organizing international premieres and translating his liturgical works into Spanish.
His discography reflects his versatility as an organist, conductor, and musicologist, combining the recovery of historical heritage with contemporary creation. In 2019 he received the Award for the Best Musical Contribution of the Year from the City Council of Málaga.
